Other nominations for Barbie included Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and two nods for Best Song (including Gosling’s I’m Just Ken). Despite the misses, both Robbie and Gerwig secured nominations – Robbie as a producer for Best Picture, and Gerwig along with her husband Noah Baumbach for Best Adapted Screenplay. The second most-nominated movie was Poor Things, a graphic art house comedy starring Emma Stone, which impressed critics and outperformed financially, earning over $100 million on a $35 million budget. Stone’s portrayal of a sex-crazed young woman garnered rave reviews, with her previous win for Best Actress in La La Land in 2017 also noted. The Best Actor in a leading role category saw Bradley Cooper and Cillian Murphy vying for the award, with Murphy ultimately winning for Oppenheimer. Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, and Jeffrey Wright also received nominations. Leonardo DiCaprio was notably snubbed for his role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon, a critically acclaimed Western crime epic. Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos led the nominations with 11, while Killers Of The Flower Moon scored 10 nominations.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American actress to be nominated for Best Actress, recognized for her role in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers Of The Flower Moon. Alongside Annette Bening, Sandra Huller, Carey Mulligan, and Emma Stone, Gladstone was in contention for the prestigious award.
Billie Eilish’s song “What Was I Made For” and Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie both received well-deserved nods for Best Original Song, with Eilish ultimately taking home the prize.
In the Best Supporting Actor category, Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan Gosling, and Mark Ruffalo were nominated, and it was Downey who emerged as the winner. The Best Directing category saw nominations for Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, while Greta Gerwig missed out on a nomination for Barbie. Known for her directorial debut Lady Bird, Gerwig was not among the nominees this time.
Despite being a prominent filmmaker, Nolan had never won an Academy Award, and neither had any of his films clinched the Best Picture title. Notably, only three women have won Oscars for Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, Chloe Zhao, and Jane Campion.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph clinched the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers.
Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo both received nominations for their performances in the film Poor Things. Emma Stone took home the award for Best Actress, while Mark Ruffalo unfortunately missed out on the Best Supporting Actor trophy, which was claimed by Robert Downey Jr.
Despite not receiving a directing nomination for Maestro, Bradley Cooper was acknowledged for his performance in the film. The Best Actor award went to Cillian Murphy for his role in Oppenheimer. The tides turned for Cooper when Oppenheimer, the film he starred in, emerged victorious.
The Best Picture category consisted of a diverse range of films including American Fiction, Anatomy Of A Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone Of Interest.
Jimmy Kimmel made his fourth appearance as the host of the ceremony, adding his signature humor and charm to the event.
